By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
August 9th 2002

The FireWire/USB 2.0 division narrows as become combo drives become ubiquitous.

Other World Computing have announced their new Mercury Elite FireWire/USB 2.0 combo
drive. Available with 7,200rpm drives in 40GB to 120GB, OWC touts the Mercury as ideal
for high-performance audio and video editing.

OWC says the key word here is versatility: Macs or Windows machines with USB 1.1. or
USB 2.0 only can hook up the drives, while FireWire-equipped Macs and PCs can also use
the drives for backup or editing.

"The storage market is moving more and more to consolidated solutions, and we have
combined the two fastest data transfer technologies into one sleek, high-capacity
solution," said Larry O''Connor, president of OWC.

The Mercury uses a high-speed FireWire bridge chip that outperforms first-generation
FireWire bridges by up to 100%.

Mercury Elite drives are compatible with any FireWire-equipped computer running OS 8.6
or later or OS X; Windows 98 or later is needed for PCs.

OWC also stocks a range of FireWire/USB and CardBus FireWire cards for computers
without these interfaces. Note that USB 2.0 support is offered only in Mac OS X, not
OS 9.

The Mercury Elite is bundled with a FireWire cable, a USB cable, external power supply
and Intech''s Hard Disk SpeedTools.

40GB drives are priced at $189.99, with 120GB drives at $299.99. The Mercury Elite is
available only at OWC.
