Add pizzaz to your movies

Put some punch into your next iMovie production with these plugins

iMovie is the ackowledged king in the increasingly crowded low-end video editing
market. It goes without saying, however, that there''s room for improvement and the
easiest way to extend iMovie''s formidable feature set is with plug-ins. Here are a
few recent third-party releases...

Get the picture

eZedia''s eZeClip 1.0, a plug-in for iMovie 2, allows would-be Spielbergs to add an
additional movie over an iMovie clip to create picture-in-picture and split screen
effects. It also allows you to resize and loop the overlaid movie, as well as add
borders and drop shadows. eZeClip is available only for OS X and sells for $29
(requires iMovie 2.1.1 or higher).

The picture-within-a-picture function is a great teaching tool. Further, it''s an
excellent way to seamlessly include informative, yet static graphics -- including
charts, photos and logos.

Transition to Hollywood

GeeThree has released two new volumes of transitions and effects for iMovie. Slick
Transitions and Effects Volume 3 includes over 100 transitions, effects and titles.
These include Aperture and Ripple transitions, Fog and Rolling Carpet titles, and
Raindrop, Color Tint and Soft Paint effects.

GeeThree''s Slick Transitions and Effects Volume 4 includes fewer but more powerful
plug-ins, including Matte-tastic for overlaying, Slick VidMix for video compositing
and Picture-in-Picture.

Both of the packages are compatible with Mac OS X and Mac OS 9. The purchase of volume
costs $50 and buying them together yields a 10 percent discount -- $90 for both
volumes 3 a 4.

Get slick

Photo to Movie 1.0.2 allows the user to create a movie by zooming and panning over a
still photo and then generating QuickTime or DV Stream files (compatible with iMovie).
The user can graphically select start and end frames, select the position and zoom of
these frames, preview the entire movie during editing, etc. Version 1.0.2 can now
export to PAL, as well as NTSC. Also, an option for high quality rendering has been
added. Photo to Movie is an X-only app and sells for $9.95.

Do you have any QuickTime tips? Do you know of a new program or plug-in that extends
iMove or QuickTime? Pop us an e-mail with the full dope.
