CompUSA begins system trade-in program
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
August 13th 2002
A number of MacsOnly readers report that the retail giant is giving cash for older
Macs and PCs toward the purchase of new systems
MacsOnly reports that readers in Pittsburgh, Lancaster (CA), Orange (CT) and Houston
have written to say that a rumored CompUSA trade-in program in fact exists.
According to MacsOnly, the program breaks down roughly as follows:
Desktop PCs
 166Mhz to 266Mhz $50
 300Mhz to 500Mhz $100
 550Mhz and higher $250
Notebook PCs
 166mhz to 266mhz $100
 300Mhz to 500Mhz $200
 550Mhz and higher $400
Apple Desktops
 PowerPC G3 $100
 PowerPC G4 $500
 iMac (any processor) $250
Apple Notebooks
 166Mhz to 266Mhz $200
 300Mhz to 400Mhz $300
 500Mhz and higher $600
* This informtion was reportedly gleaned from a CompUSA newspaper ad.
A quick visual check and search of the CompUSA website revealed no mention of a
trade-in program.
Although, MacsOnly doesn''t offer additional details, it''s probably fair to assume
that trade-in systems should be in working order and include the bundled system disks
if not all of the original software. It also seems fair to assume one can trade-in an
old PC for a new Mac and vice versa.
Also, the question of whether or not this offer can be used in conjunction with other
sales enticements, such as Apple''s Crystal Clear program, is as of yet unanswered.
It''s interesting to note that Apple systems seem to carry a premium.
Can any of you confirm or refute the existence of this CompUSA program and/or provide
details?
