.Mac annual membership period extended for iTools users
By Michael Flaminio, Insanely Great Mac
August 20th 2002
Apple issued an email stating current iTools users can get up to seven weeks of
additional .Mac service for signing up before the trial deadline.
In the most recent of an increasing volume of .Mac solicitations, Apple is promising
extra time on the clock for iTools users. In an email sent out to iTools users, Apple
informs customers that they can receive up to seven weeks of extra .Mac service on the
first year of the paid online service.
Apple has extended the expiration time for the first year of service to September 30,
2003. The current trial period ends on September 30, 2002. What this means is that
early adopters won''t be penalized for subscribing early, versus those who choose to
fully utilize the trail period before upgrading to the subscription service in
September. "[This] means that the sooner you join, the more time you get to enjoy the
full benefits of .Mac membership," stated the email.
The .Mac service is available to current iTools users for $49.95 for the first year.
The service is available to new users for $99.95 per year, which is also the price
after the first year for iTools users.
Analysis:
Depending on how you feel about .Mac, this can be seen as either an act of
desperation, or just common sense. Personally I think Apple is more interested in
selling .Mac at retail than to current iTools users. But certainly Apple is interested
in bringing in a good percentage of the iTools crowd. By the way, "You only have 41
days left to take advantage of this special price."
