XServe RAID Coming

How about 14 ATA buses in your bedroom?
ThinkSecret is repoting that Apple plans to ship a RAID-equipped XServe by the end of
2002.
According the ThinkSecret''s sources, Apple has demoed what we''ll call ''XRAID'' at
selected sales demonstrations and various other Apple presentations. Some were also
given a sneak peek at XRAID at Seybold.
The article predicts a 3U RAID with 14 ATA buses, a dual system controller, and an
Apple Drive Module. Reportedly supporting up to 1.8 terabytes of storage, a 2GB fibre
channel and 200MB/ps bandwidth. The report also says that there will be "seamless
integration" with XServe.
Analysis: If accurate, this suggests that Apple is dead serious about making inroads
into the server market. With XServe, it appears that Apple is low-balling on price to
take real market share from HP and others. Delivering a competitively-priced XRAID
will mean IS managers won''t care whether it''s an Apple or not, so long as it
delivers on features at an aggressive price.
