One NASty server
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

With sustained reads over 250MB/s and writes over 220MB/s, this is as much server as
most video editors will ever need

Maxtor and nStor Technologies have announced their collaboration to bring one of the
industry''s fastest performing, high-bandwidth, reliable storage solutions to
broadcast and professional video editors.

Essential to scientific streaming data, high-definition editing and rendering
applications, Maxtor''s Atlas 10K III-U320 drives, integrated within nStor''s NexStor
4000S Ultra320, 12-bay storage system, can deliver blazing speed and performance
coupled with leading reliability -- no lost frames, tearing or distortion.

"Uncompressed, high-definition video runs at 30 frames per second, which requires an
average of 170 MBs per second for either reading or writing," said Chad Steele,
director of sales support, nStor. "The nStor/Maxtor U320 solution meets and exceeds
these performance requirements while using only half of its 12-disk drive capacity.
We''ve sustained over 250 MBs per second on reads and over 220 MB per second on
writes."

The NexStor 4000S combines performance with high-density, accommodating 12 low-profile
73GB drives, active/active RAID controllers and Ultra320 performance all within the
same 3.5-inch form factor. The maximum capacity is 876GB and is scalable to 1.7TB with
next generation of disk drives (not yet available). All 4000S systems employ a modular
design, making them excellent building blocks for expanding, direct-connect storage
environments. In addition, the 4000S series offer flexible, customizable
configurations to meet the needs of OEMs, resellers and end-users.

The Maxtor Atlas 10K III-U320 is the industry''s first SCSI hard drive to feature the
Ultra320 interface for storing and transferring enterprise-class data at burst speeds
up to 320 MB per second, twice as fast as the previous best-in-class SCSI interface.
The Atlas 10K III-U320 offers industry-leading capacities of up to 73GB and features a
4.5ms seek time, a large 8 MB cache buffer and a maximum sustained interface transfer
rate up to 55 MB per second. Maxtor''s Data Protection and Shock Protection systems as
well as SMART compliance ensure reliability under the toughest conditions.

nStor''s NexStor 4000S Ultra320 storage system, featuring Maxtor''s Atlas 10K III-U320
drive, is available directly through nStor. This is the sort of product that if you
have to ask, "How much?" you probably can''t afford it.

Editor''s note: This type of product is by nature platform agnostic. However, given
that Apple is the leading provider of DV systems and an increasingly important
software vendor for professional use, develops such as this only add momentum to the
company''s drive to dominate the standard.

It will be interesting to see how the Xserve RAID stacks up against this product.
