Lexar intros multiple-media card reader

Here's an all-in-one way to six different types of memory cards
Lexar Media has introduced its new USB Multi-Card Reader. Users working with multiple
digital memory card formats can experience the convenience of the Multi-Card Reader's
six different memory card slots integrated into one streamlined card reader. The
Multi-Card Reader is compatible with CompactFlash Type I/II, SmartMedia, Memory Stick,
MultiMediaCard and SecureDigital memory cards and is priced $39.99 manufacturer's
suggested list.
"Our new Multi-Card Reader has an extremely small and portable design, especially
considering that it accepts six different memory card form factors. It's the perfect
reader for anyone juggling multiple devices that take different types of storage
cards," said David Klenske, director of product marketing, Lexar Media. "With the
Multi-Card Reader as a primary data transfer device, users can spend less time moving
digital music, images and movie files between digital equipment and computers."
As with other Lexar Media card readers, the Multi-Card Reader offers portability and
USB connection to PC or Macintosh, a built-in data write protection light that blinks
while files are being written to, or transferred from the memory card within the
reader, free technical support and one-year warranty.
Image Rescue
In related news, Lexar has also announced that its Image Rescue will begin shipping in
October for $39.99 (SRP). Previously, Image Rescue was only available as a service
through authorized professional photo dealers.
Lexar's proprietary image file recovery program recovers "perceived to be lost" image
files from Lexar Media-brand USB-enabled CompactFlash memory cards. The most common
causes of image loss include removing the card from a camera or reader before the
image has been fully stored, accidentally deleting a picture, reformatting a card or
low battery power in a digital camera. Lexar Media Image Rescue goes to the root-level
of the data structure to identify and retrieve lost images, even if the computer does
not see the card. In most instances Image Rescue can identify and retrieve JPEG, TIFF
and RAW file formats.
This software X.2 compatible. There is no specific mention of Classic compatibility or
lack thereof.
Editor's note: A single device that reads all of the common memory cards is a smart
buy for bureaus and printers. I wish more photo shops in Taiwan had such devices. As
is only about one-in-10 can read the Memory Sticks I use with my Sony Mavica.
