New Major Player Entering the Mac News Market?
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
September 25th 2002

A possibly saturated market may be welcoming a new entrant.

Spymac is reporting that "high-ranking forces" in the Mac news media are ready to
launch a new Mac news and information site.

The story says that an anonymous member of the new team will take Mac news reporting
"to a whole new level". The endeavor reportedly includes some founding members from
two of the biggest Mac news sites in North America.

Spymac says the site is slated to launch early next month.

Analysis: As Spymac notes, MacCentral is the current market leader in news. As the
one-time-almost-editor of Australian MacWorld, I can tell you there's a lot of dollars
in that ad market and a lot of dollars spent resourcing and outfitting both the
on-line and print publications.

Is the Mac market saturated? Some segments might be (such as news), but different
sites serve different Mac users. LowEnd serves a wide user base of people who are not
always just interested in the latest and greatest, for instance. There's room for
quite a few of us, although we're well past the phase where sites could be run for
'free'.
