Steve 'no salary' Jobs tops executive comp list

The master of the reality distortion field pulled in a $40-plus million bonus, but his
'take home' pay is still nil
According to a report by the Economic Research Institute (ERI), the highest paid
executives saw a 1.9 percent decrease in their total compensation in Q2 2002. The most
recent Executive Compensation Index released by ERI and CareerJournal.com said this
fall stands in sharp contrast to the 15.7 percent increase in total compensation
executives received two years ago.
Since 2000, executive pay raises have fallen dramatically, with an average increase of
just (emphasis added) 2.1 percent last year, followed by a 1.5 percent increase in Q1
of 2002, and a 1.9 percent decrease in Q2 of this year. The highest paid exec for the
most recent survey period was Steven Jobs, iCEO. He received no salary, but was given
a $43,511,534 bonus.
The Index, instituted in 1997, tracks the total cash compensation (salary + bonus) for
the highest-paid executives at a cross section of 45 major US businesses.
Editor's note: Oy, Steve! I laid down serious cash for my G4. Think you could could
spare a dime or two off the price of a new one? First there was the jet and now this!
In truth, I don't begrudge the amount or the timing. It's the jet that sticks in my
craw... ;>
