Lexmark intros new sub-$200 all-in-one

The company is refreshing its best-selling SOHO model and its still Mac compatible
Lexmark has announced its latest "value-packed" all-in-one, the Lexmark X85 All-In-One
Print Center. The successor to the popular X83 model, which is still No. 1-selling AIO
in the US, offers Lexmark's award-winning inkjet print technology coupled with a
flatbed scanner, computer-free color copying and scan-to-computer fax capabilities.
�Recent Intelect data further demonstrates the success of the X85's predecessors, the
X83 and X73 -- compact, multi-purpose imaging solutions that meet the various needs of
home and office users,� said Tim Craig, Lexmark vice president and president, consumer
printer division. �These rankings underscore our commitment to continue developing and
introducing products that deliver the quality and performance consumers have come to
expect from Lexmark.�
The X85 will be offered in black and is designed for SOHO users. This a sleek, compact
solution for general printing needs, as well as creating personalized cards, scanning
traditional family photos and printing digital images. With output resolution of up to
4800 x 1200 dpi using photo paper and 2400 x 1200 dpi on general use paper, the X85 is
designed to produce a full-range of documents at up to 12ppm.
Suited to handle traditional photographs and books of varying thickness, the X85�s
flatbed scanner with removable lid ensures maximum flexibility. The 600 x 1200 dpi
optical resolution, 48-bit color scan depth and up to 19,200 dpi enhanced resolution
allows for the ultimate in scanned output.
Additionally, the X85's Print Center delivers up to 99 copies from one original and
has a zoom range of 25 to 400 percent for reducing and enlarging images. This unit's
scan-to-PC fax capability features fully functional black and color fax applications.
The Lexmark X85 AIO Print Center is expected to retail for $199 and will be available
at popular retailers including Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples and Wal-Mart. The X85
will ship with a high-resolution black cartridge, high-resolution color cartridge and
a software bundle that includes ABBYY Fine Reader 4.0 Sprint OCR (two years out of
date, v5.0 is Mac compatible and a demo is available) for text editing, BVRP Fax
Software (apparently not Mac compatible) and MGI Photo Suite (from Roxio, not Mac
compatible) in the box.
Editor's note: As of this writing X.2-compatible drivers are not yet available for the
X83 and no compatibility info is listed for the X85. At face value, this product
appears to be only about 50 percent Mac compatible.
