Toshiba Releases 60GB 5,400rpm 2.5" Drive

Slim 9.5mm, high-capacity drive should push prices down for lower-capacity models.
Toshiba has claimed it is the first manufacturer to release a 5,400rpm 60GB 2.5" hard
drive in a 9.5mm form factor.
The notebook drive supports UDMA-100, ATA-5 and has a large 16MB buffer.
Like Toshiba's OEM rival, IBM, the new drives also feature motor technology with fluid
dynamic bearings. As a result, Toshiba claims the drive produces on 26db in acoustic
noise at idle and 33fb during seek.
Toshiba also makes the ultra-slim hard drives for Apple's range of iPods. Apple itself
varies its OEM sources for notebook hard drives, and has used IBM, Toshiba and Fujitsu
drives in its PowerBooks and iBooks.
Toshiba says the new 60GB drive is shipping now to resellers and PC manufacturers.
Analysis: More competition in the notebook drive market is always good, and these
drives should prove popular in FireWire-powered drive enclosures,as well as inside
notebooks and MP3 players. Expect to see price drops on 40GB drives, and 30GB drives
should be positively cheap - if they aren't cheap enough already.
