Free apps that play encoded tunes and more, as well as this week's Top 10
Apple's iTunes is by far the most popular mp3 player available for the platform. For
those looking for alternatives or ways to extend it, this week's IGM Hot Picks
includes a passel of apps designed to enhance your listening experience.
mpegToaster is a high performance mpeg audio player -- "by far the fastest player on
Mac OS X," according to unname users cited by the app's author. If you have an mpeg
player running while you do real work, this is the application you need. mpegToaster
uses very little processor time and memory; a highly optimized version of mpg123 is
used to decode mpeg audio data and playing is done through the CoreAudio interface,
which has minimal overhead.
LimeWire is a great alternative to the now defunct Napster client and though many
don't know it, this handy-dandy app also can be used to play the tunes you download.
LimeWire also offers the ability to search for videos, images, and program
applications.
However, as recently noted elsewhere (sorry, couldn't find the article), using
Limewire as opposed downloading it comes with a hidden cost -- if you should use a
click through (i.e. an affiliate program participant) to purchase goods on Amazon.com
or similar online retailer, Limewire may hijack the deal and abscond with the
commission.
StreamRipperX is an open source (GPL) application for Mac OS X that allows you to
listen to Internet radio streams and rip the songs as individual MP3 files.
StreamRipperX is a native Cocoa port of the unix command-line tool, StreamRipper.
Ampcaster X lists streaming -- literally dozens more than you'll find in iTunes -- mp3
music stations off the web and lets you launch them into your MP3 player. In addition
to more radio stations, this highly useful app also lists categories, such as Middle
Eastern, that Apple's mp3 player doesn't even list.
