iMac: 15" price cut, 17" model shipping

It appears increasingly likely that new consumer desktops will ship this Fall
Apple has quietly cut the price of the SuperDrive-equipped 15-inch LCD iMac by 100
clams. This move follows a similar price cut in the UK in July to spur sales in the
face of "sluggish PC demand and a slumping dollar" (News.com quoting an Apple
official).
As we reported earlier, 15-inch LCD production is expected to end this month. With
discounting begun, it's likely new units have already stopped rolling off the
erstwhile iMac-maker's (Quanta) production lines.
Also, October is the month when Apple's rumored 19-inch LCD iMacs are expected to
start flowing from the loading docks of Hon Hai-affiliate Q-Run. We reported on these
rumors last week.
To date, little is known about the upcoming 19-inch LCD iMacs.
With CRT and 15-inch LCD iMac production ending, as well as a shifting of suppliers
from Quanta to Hon Hai, not to mention the introduction of a new model, it will be
interesting to see how well Apple handles the transition. If they can fly through
this, to my mind an incredibly challenging product change over (in time and with ample
supply to for X'mas buying), the world cannot help but sit up and take notice.
