FireWire 2 first for LaCie

The venerable enclosure maker has announced plans to be the first to market with
FireWire2 products
Macworld UK reports that LaCie has purchased the first shipment of FireWire 2 (1394b)
bridges from manufacturer Oxford Semiconductor.
LaCie plans to release new products that include the technology before anyone else.
It's already discussing plans to introduce storage devices encased in its new-look D2
enclosures.
LaCie CEO Philippe Spruch told Macworld UK, "With greater speed, bandwidth and
distance capabilities, the second generation of FireWire is bound to become the
interface of choice for digital-content creators. Oxford's technological breakthrough
will allow us to be the first to offer the fastest disks on the market to FireWire
users."
IEEE1394b is the next-generation of the serial connection standard. It offers
theoretical data-transfer speeds of up to 800Mbps versus the 400Mbps of the current
1394a implementation of FireWire. The supported distances have also been improved,
with 1394b, reaching 50m at 400Mbps, or up to 100 metres at 200Mbps. Plans exist to
take speeds to more than 1.6Gbps over plastic optical-fiber cables in a future
iteration of the standard.
Editor's note: LaCie is trying to earn mindshare. Moreover, it's highly unlikely that
the chips they've received are final silicon as these are not expected until November.
Also, FireWire2 PCI upgrade cards and Macs equipped with the technology won't likely
be available until MWSF. There may more to "pre-announce," but the real thunder is yet
to come.
