La Cie First off the Blocks with 800Mb/ps FireWire

Faster FireWire soon to become reality.
LaCie has announced it has purchased 800Mbps 'FireWire II' bridges from Oxford
Semiconductor. This is likely to make LaCie first to market with 800Mbps FireWire
devices.
According to a story at MacWorld UK, LaCie, which already develops FireWire and USB
2.0 peripherals, will introduce FireWire 2 devices to its hard drives, CDRWs and DVD-R
devices.
Oxford Semiconductor is a major supplier of FireWire bridge board to OEMs and Oxford
has been quick to move to the 1394b standard. It claims its 'Oxford 911' boards are
the fastest iteration of the 1394a (400Mbps) standard.
Analysis: Apple has yet to unveil 800Mbps FireWire controllers on Mac motherboards,
but it would be reasonable to assume this could be incorporated into models released
at MWSF in January '03. Expect a revved iPod to get 800Mbps FW as well somewhere down
the track. The good news is it will kill USB 2.0 on the performance front, keeping in
mind that no one seems to have seen anything like the '480Mbps' speed of USB 2.0 in
the real world.
Apple does need to get Macs out with FireWire II though: it will push entry-level
FireWire I prices down further, while prompting third-party manufacturers to jump on
the apple cart and get those 800MBps hard drives out there.
