365,000 Hit AppleStores over Thanksgiving
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
December 2nd 2002
Light at the end of the PC downturn tunnel.
Consumer spending on PCs and electronics was up over the Thanksgiving weekend, a story
at Dow Jones Business News reports.
Apple's Ron Johnson, senior vice-president of retail, said 365,000 people walked into
one of Apple's 50 Retail Stores. Johnson said it was the "busiest week ever" at Apple
retail.
Wal-mart, Best Buy and J.C. Penney's were among the big retailers who also reported
strong consumer spending, with J.C Penney saying its sales this past weekend were up
significantly over 2001. Wal-mart did $1.43 billion worth of business nationally on
Friday.
HP and Dell also did well, with HP claiming sales in some product categories up by
100-200% over last year. On the PC front, HP says its notebook have broken into
double-digit growth. Dell is expected to release weekend sales numbers today.
Analysis: It looks like consumer spending is still the only thing propping the US
economy up at the moment. But it's significant that Apple, Dell and HP are really the
only PC firms not bleeding red ink everywhere. Now it's just the 'Big Three'? Maybe.
Has anyone heard from Gateway lately...
