Cancelled: MacWorld Tokyo
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
December 5th 2002
Apple-IDG split deepens
MacUser UK has obtained confirmation that MacWorld Tokyo 2003 has been cancelled.
The news follows a dispute between IDG, the promotors of MacWorld expos and the
publisher of MacWorld and Apple, which arose in October over changes of venue for the
US shows. IDG has opted to move the July New York show to Boston, the traditional home
of MacWorld.
According to MacUser, a number of vendors have followed Apple's lead, including
Macromedia, Adobe and Microsoft. As a result, IDG concluded that a Tokyo show would
not bring in sufficient revenue to justify mounting the expo.
The decision was reached some weeks ago, although no public announcement was made by
IDG in Tokyo.
Apple has stated that the company will not attend a Boston show, although it has said
it will proceed with MacWorld New York in July 2003. The Boston shows commence 2004.
More recently, IDG had threatened to prevent Apple from exhibiting at MWSF in January
'03, although nothing has come of this threat.
