Apple unveils refreshed PowerMacs

Gentlemen, check your credit balances, 1.42GHz G4s are on the way
Apple has announced the fastest and most affordable PowerMac G4 line ever featuring a
choice of a single 1GHz, dual 1.25GHz or dual 1.42GHz G4 processors. Additionally, the
updated line features FireWire 800, and has internal support for 54Mbps AirPort
Extreme and Bluetooth networking.
Apple has also unveiled a new 20-inch Cinema Display (see this earlier IGM report),
priced at $1,299, as well as "significant" price reductions for its entire flat-panel
display line (details are coming).
?With dual 1.25 GHz performance priced at only $1,999 plus our new 20-inch Cinema
Display priced at just $1,299, Apple is delivering unprecedented value to our
professional customers,? said Greg Joswiak, vice president, hardware product
marketing. ?With Firewire 800 and support for AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth, the new
Power Macs are the ultimate systems for the digital professional.?
Based on the Xserve architecture, including up to 2MB of fast DDR Level 3 cache and
333 MHz DDR memory, the new Power Mac G4 line offers up to 21 gigaflops (21 billion
floating point operations per second) of performance.
As anticipated, the "new" G4 will ship with iLife pre-installed, as well as QuickBooks
(not Quicken), Office X Test Drive, FileMaker Pro Trial, M$ IE, EarthLink, Acrobat
Reader, Art Directors Toolkit, FAXstf, GraphicConverter, OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner and
Developer Tools.
The single 1GHz G4 is priced at $1,499 and the dual 1.25GHz G4 is pegged at $1,999.
Both of these models are available now. The dual 1.42GHz G4 ($2,699), however, won't
ship until next month. All three models can be ordered now through the Apple Store.
Editor's note: Apple's pricing is aggressive and that's welcome, but I think it
unlikely to spur significant upgrade buying given the continued lack of a 333MHz FSB.
That we've moving to 1.42GHz, an increase of 170-odd MHz, isn't particularly
enthralling though most welcome nonetheless.
It seems somewhat odd that Safari isn't included in the software bundle. Then again,
it is a beta.
