Dell to axe floppy drives

'You've gotta draw the line at some point,' says a spokesman
News.com reports that Dell will stop including floppy drives as standard hardware on
its Dimension consumer desktops later this quarter, nearly five years after Apple
launched its floppyless iMacs.
"We would like to see customers migrate away from floppies as quickly as possible,
because there are better alternative technologies out there," Mark Vena, director,
product marketing, Dimension desktop PCs, told News.com.
Although Dell will "work to educate consumers" that USB drives are a better way to
take their data mobile, floppy drives will be still be available as an option for
buyers.
But USB drives aren't cheap like floppy drives. A low-end 16 MB USB drive costs about
$20.
"Customers still have an emotional tie to floppies," he said. "But it's an antique
technology. At some point, you've got to draw the line. You wouldn't think of using a
processor from 15 years ago."
Editor's note: In addition to writing for IGM, I also consult and do contract jobs. I
recently turned a customer away who showed up at my door with this project stored on
11 floppy disks. Fundamentally, storing his stuff on that many floppies would have
added an hour to a job that would take about four.
