Rumor: IE 6.0 Hold Up, MSN 8.0 Coming Soon?
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
February 10th 2003

IE 6.0's release date stuck on amber.

Nick de Plume over at ThinkSecret reports that IE 6.0 is mostly complete, with its
rendering engine finished some months ago. But ThinkSecret sources state that
management has yet to give the Mac version of the world's most popular browser the
green light.

"We were told by upper management to hold it back until they gave it the green light,"
said a former MacBU employee to ThinkSecret. MS have not set a release daye for IE 6:
Mac.

There is better news on the MSN 8.0 front, with the MacBU apparently devoting
considerable resources to the completion of the OS X version of MSN. MS's MSN
Messenger, a rival of Apple's AOL IM client, iChat, will apparently be released
simultaneously with MSN 8.0.

Analysis: MS is probably watching Safari closely, and we wouldn't be surprised if MS
'borrowed' some features from Safari to incorporate into the IE Windows and Mac
versions. What surprises me more is why MS haven't just forced you to use IE as they
do on the Windows platform: build the browser into Office v.X, with a window pane on
the left for Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Entourage/Messenger...Shh. Better not give them any
ideas.
