iDVD Compatibility with Matsushita DVD-R-LF-D310?
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
February 17th 2003

Possible OEM solution for SuperDrive-less Macs.

One Matshushita DVD-R drive (marketed under the Panasonic brand name) may be
compatible out-of-the-box with iDVD, hardware site MacBidouille notes.

The article says that the Matsushita DVD-R-LF-D310 works in one test mule, a Power Mac
G4/733. Obviously, this is on the internal IDE bus. But it opens up a variety of
possibilities for owners of other Power Macs which shipped without internal
SuperDrives. Aftermarket Pioneer drives, which are physically identical to Apple's OEM
SuperDrives, do not work with iDVD.

Matsushita's DVD-R-LF-D310 reads and writes both DVD-R and DVD-RAM discs. A PDF [852k]
detailing the drive's installation and function check under Windows [no mention of
Macintosh in the documentation] is also available.

Software Architects' DVD-RAM Tune Up software does work with OS 8/9, so clearly the
Matsushita drive does work with the Mac.

Analysis: Not too shabby, if this pans out. Given that Apple now sell iDVD as part of
iLife, it's perfectly legitimate, in our book, to search out DVD-R drives which work
with it. It would be a good addition to a cheap(ish) DP533, particularly if the budget
means DVD Studio Pro is out of the question.

Next step: would it work as a FireWire drive on the PCI bus? Sounds like any drive
iDVD looks for has to be found on the IDE bus.
