iBook wins over another school district

Thousands of suburban Chicago elementary students will be getting Apple portables next
Fall
The Daily Herald reports that elementary students in the Schaumburg Township District
53 in suburban Chicago will be getting new iBooks this Fall. In total, some 1,700
students at seven of the district's 22 elementary schools will be receiving Apple
portables when classes resume next September.
"I think back 20 years ago. A school wouldn't even consider not having a set of
encyclopedias," teacher Jennifer Antonson told the Daily Herald. "This is a new
resource every child should have access to."
Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 plans to give every student at seven
schools in grades four, five and six an Apple iBook laptop to use during the school
year. The District 54 school board approved the project last Thursday.
Additionally, when fully implemented in the 2005-06, a total of 5,100 students and
dozens of staff members will be participating in the plan, including all of the
district's 22 elementary schools.
According to the report, each phase of this three phase plan is expected to cost about
$2.1 million for hardware, software, training and support.
This latest education win follows in the mold created by schools in Maine and Henrico
County, VA about which IGM has reported in the past.
