NY Time: Maine iBook program a great success

Apple's partnership with the State of Maine continues to be a source of good new
The New York Times (free registration required) reports that attendance is up and
detentions are down in the six months since Maine began a "controversial" to provide
iBooks to every seventh grader in the state. Moreover, the NYT states educators are
impressed by how quickly students and teachers have adapted to laptop technology.
According the report, no one seems more surprised by the success of the program than
the state's governor, Angus King. When he announced the plan in the summer of 2000,
King was stunned by the vehemence of the objections.
King says the statewide effort, the first of its kind in the nation, "was more
controversial than abortion, gay rights or even clear cutting. People hated it. They
thought it was extravagant; they thought the kids wouldn't take care of the computers."

Editor's note: An connection that the NYT and no one else seems to make is that these
kids aren't using "computers" (ie idiot PCs that crash regularly, require massive
support programs, are incompatible with themselves, etc, etc), they're using Macs.
Does anyone know a single PC-based education program that's this successful? No
heresay please ? a link is what we're looking for here.
