ATI Launches Radeon 9800: A 'Souped-Up' 9700?

New ATI flagship tipped to ship inside 15 days.
ATI has officially launched its Radeon 9800, 9600 and 9200 series of graphics cards,
says Taiwan's Digitimes.
The new Radeons have been an open secret for weeks, if not months. What is news is
that ATI plan to start shipping them this month, or in as little as two weeks.
According to Geek.com, the "9600 should at least offer [nVidia] GeForce 4 Ti 4600
performance". Interestingly, the mid-range 9600 is based on .13 micron technology,
while the high-end 9800 stays with the older .15 micron.
The Inquirer is somewhat disparaging about the Radeon 9800 Pro, describing it as a
"speeded-up 9700".
Analysis: If someone offered me a "speeded-up Ferrari", I think I'd take it - wouldn't
you? Apple already offers the Radeon 9700 for its desktops and the Mobility Radeon
9000 on the TiBook. But Apple have switched back and forth between ATI and nVidia, as
each firm tries to outdo the other on the speed front. However, ATI has been the one
with the momentum over the last 18-24 months. And, the general consensus appears to be
that the nVidia card in Mini-Me (PowerBook-12) is a downgrade, particularly on the
gaming front.
