Apple's X11 hits beta 3

Run X11 apps using this open source-based windowing system
Apple has released beta 3 of its X11 for Mac OS X, an implementation of the X Window
System that makes it possible to run X11-based applications under X. Based on the open
source XFree86 project, the most common implementation of the standard, X11 for Mac OS
X Public Beta is compatible, fast and fully integrated with Mac OS X. It includes the
full X11R6.6 technology including an X11 window server, Quartz window manager,
libraries and basic utilities such as xterm.
Apple's X11 environment can be used to run such open-source hits as Open Office, which
is a low-cost replacement for Microsoft's widely used Office suite. Additionally,
there are literally thousands of other open-source applications that can be run under
this environment, including industrial-strength favorites like Gimp, an image editor.

Editor's note: The appeal of Apple's luke warm embrace of open source largely hinges
on X11 and similar entres that provide a bridge between its proprietary environment
and millions of developers worldwide.
