I was using various Java apps without any problems on OS X Mavericks

I upgraded to Yosemite (10.10) this weekend, and now I'm seeing an error
message I hadn't seen previously:

To open "DavMail" you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime.

I understand what the message is telling me, but I'm curious if anyone
knows why, and if there is a way around it. I'd rather not install Java
6 anything if I can help it.

Turns out that Oracle Java 7 is no longer supported in Yosemite, you have to upgrade to Java 8. After doing so most of my stuff works now, but one important app does not.
