I can “copy” a file under APFS instantly, regardless of size since it doesn’t
really make a copy, but rather just makes a link (essentially. If mot exactly
accurate). I can create a new volume on an APFS disk in nearly as short a time,
and that volume will only take up the space it uses, negating the need for
partitions.

However, I don’t think it is possible to make a clone of a volume without
actually making a new copy of all the data, is that correct?

When Mojave is release later this month (probably) I would like to create a
clean installation and then clone it to a second volume as my work volume, but
if I am seeing all the options correctly, I can only create TWO fresh installs
and then use one, as the space saving abilities of APFS do no cross volumes
even if they are on the same physical disk.

Our did I miss something?

(I currently have my High Sierra clean install, High Sierra work, and Mojave
beta as volumes on my 1TB boot SSD).
