If you have the time, please try this build out, compiling and testing. It's been tested with perl 5.6.0 and gcc2/gcc3 on Mac OS X 10.2, but I imagine it should work with any combination of perl 5.6.0/5.6.1/5.8.0, gcc2/gcc3, and Mac OS X 10.1/10.2.
