We don't have a documented blessed version of python to be used as
default. I think it just happened that maintainers settled on python26
without discussion.
What makes python27 better than python26? Can we expect full compatibility?

I didn't research that, but I agree setting a default of python should
be concerted.
default variants are back to python 2.6 for now.
