Okay, that worked. I deleted the previously created macports user and group and did a Subversion install. This time the user's UniqueID was the first unused ID above 500 instead of above the highest in-use UniqueID. On my laptop that is an Open Directory network/mobile account with a UniqueID of 1025 and previously macports had been created with a UniqueID of 1026 which collided with other Open Directory accounts.
