Thanks for the thoughtful reply; probably more thoughtful than my original commentary on this thread was, since I did indeed neglect to read through the "Fortran recipe" thread and it clearly impacted a port of mine. I think the primary issue was not doing "eval" on the variants; I like the newer version of this recipe, though I still have questions related to that thread.
