Something like this was implemented during GSoC 2010, but we never got to merge it to the master branch. I am not sure what the completed feature set entails and the branch definitely would need a bit of cleanup. https://github.com/macports/macports-base/tree/gsoc10-configfiles I wanted to get back to this, but there is always something else coming up that requires attention (as well as the day-to-day work etc.).
