MacPorts base does not always use Xcode's git. The code is here: https://github.com/macports/macports-base/blob/master/src/port1.0/portfetch.tcl#L192-L198 It currently uses Xcode git for OS X 10.10 Yosemite and later and MacPorts git for OS X 10.9 Mavericks and earlier.
