crash in the assembler makes me think of a bug with the compiler.
there is a similar problem with gimp-lqr-plugin on 10.5, can you try
it to see if the same thing happen with 10.4 ?

gimp-lqr-plugin installed with no problem (less than a minute) on
10.4.10 with xcode tools 2.5.
