I have installed the latest version of macPorts.
"port upgrade" gave me a list of outdated ports, but "sudo port

Can't map the URL 'file://.' to a port description file ("Could not

Please verify that the directory and portfile syntax are correct.
To use the current port, you must be in a port's directory.
(you might also see this message if a pseudo-port such as
outdated or installed expands to no ports).
Not sure how to solve this error.
You didn't tell it what port to upgrade. Use e.g. "sudo port upgrade
zlib" to upgrade zlib. Or if you're sure you want to upgrade
everything, you can try "sudo port upgrade outdated" to upgrade all
outdated ports.
