I've had trouble with freetype ignoring things it should see in the cflags (cppflags?) too. Try setting it in ldflags instead for freetype.


In my experience it's a common failure mode for poorly written autoconf configurations; the usual workaround is to hide it in LDFLAGS, but in extreme cases I've had to do really evil things like wrappers for gcc.
