Are you issuing "startx" from your CLI, or are you using the gui?
I think if you "startx" in the terminal it tends to collide with the mac windowing env. Try using spotlight to find "x11" and double-click the application icon in any list returned; that would be a definitive test of whether you have borked it or not. Sorry if this is not helpful.
