I tried to install the separate gimp help package using:

$ sudo port install gimp-user-manual
Password:
--->  Computing dependencies for gimp-user-manual
--->  Cleaning gimp-user-manual
$

But when I tried to load help within Gimp I still got:

Could not open 'http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-help.xml' for reading:
Operation not supported

Perhaps you are missing GIO backends and need to install GVFS?

Perhaps the binary you found should be added to /opt/local/lib/gimp/2.0 .
Not sure myself yet. Still checking things out..
