We used to have the language bindings as variants on the subversion port (which 
is nice when building them as it takes a little less time) - but you can't 
depend on variants (yet?), so it was necessary to make them their own ports.

It's extra effort to keep them all in sync, though. If nothing needs to depend 
on the language bindings, it's probably fine to keep them as variants (and you 
can always move them to a separate port if/when you need to be able to depend 
on them).
