Thanks for the comments. In fact "named-checkzone" and "named-checkconf" are two of the reasons I finally bit the bullet and upgraded! MY copy of Bind 8 has been running on my DEC Alpha under Tru64 Unix since about 1995, and had not been updated since Bind 9 was released. (And Tru64 hasn't been "taken care of" since Dec was bought by Compaq and then by HP... but that's another story.)
