If that fails the same way, verify perl5 and perl5.8 are installed
and active:
port installed perl5.8 perl5
If they are, you could try reinstalling them:
sudo port -n upgrade --force perl5.8 perl5
Indeed, that is almost certainly necessary. For this line appeared in
Thomas's original report:
:info:configure sh: /opt/local/bin/perl: No such file or directory
which indicates that something has gone awry with his perl
installation.
What does the following produce for output.
$ port contents perl5
$ port contents perl5.8
--
