See if any of your startup files are setting it. A non-interactive "sh"
invocation may produce a different environment than the one you use
interactively in your terminal.
% grep IFS ~/.*profile ~/.*rc
For kicks, you could try this, although I don't expect it to work, given what
we've seen so far:
% sh -c 'echo -n $IFS | hexdump'
vq
