Many other things (including a few VMs) were working fine on the system,
but indeed the disk needed minor repair (missing blocks etc.). After
rebooting and repairing,
this problem disappeared. Whatever queries are made by the installer to
find out
what disks are available were somehow broken I guess.
Thanks for suggesting the disk check.

I did it again and turned on the log with "show all logs". After the initial

Hmm. Is there anything unusual about your disk? What is its name -- does it
contain special characters? Is it formatted Mac OS Extended (case-insensitive,
journaled) or something else? Can you verify the disk in Disk Utility to make
sure it's ok?
