I did install port inkscape-app and I get the same behavior — the incessant
appearance and disappearance of the XQuartz icon in the Dock, and NO Inscape
window or items in the menu bar — as when I tried running inkscape from command
line.
I do see an Inkscape icon in the Dock, but it does not have the tell-tale dot
under it to indicate the app is open.
[I’m beginning to suspect an XQuartz problem, as I’m getting the same issue
with the XQuartz icon when I try to run rCmdr from within RStudio after giving
the RStudio command quartz(). so I completely uninstalled XQuartz and
reinstalled. No change!]
Not sure what the “usual place” means for crash logs.

Good evening,
Trying to start inkscape at the command-line also crashes. XQuartz starts,
there are several GTK-WARNING at the console about missing actions, then an
errorbox that states that « Inkscape has encountered an internal error and will
close ». Clicking on close displays « Segmentation error: 11 » at the console.
The crash log contains the following chosen tidbits.

Ah ok if the XQuartz icon keeps disappearing then that's probably what's
crashing.
I do see an Inkscape icon in the Dock, but it does not have the tell-tale dot

Inkscape is not a real Mac app so it won't behave like a normal Mac app icon in
the dock.

I will debug this if someone can tell me how to install the port with source
line debug enabled.
Also how do I get to see the exact CFLAGS etc that is used in the build?
I found that if I build Inkscape outside of MacPorts port file but against
MacPorts libs and headers
Inkscape works.

Does the patch attached to the ticket not work?
The full environment for each step is listed in the log file for the
port. This is normally removed after a successful install though. So run
'sudo port destroot inkscape' to do a build without installing and then
'port logfile inkscape' to find the path to the log.
To build with debug symbols, you of course have to change the flags
used. This should do it (make sure you clean first):
sudo port -k install inkscape configure.optflags="-O0 -g"
(The -k will prevent the work directory from being removed after
successful installation. This is where the .dSYM files/directories are,
without which debugging doesn't work nearly as well.)
