This list is about installing a package manager and upgrading packages from within the package manager. See: https://www.macports.org/install.php Once you install MacPorts, you can install any version of python (ideally 2.7 as well as 3.5 or 3.6, ...) as well as "any other open source software". You just run sudo port install python27 without any headaches with dmg files and broken paths. You might want to remove the python you install via the above mentioned dmg.
