This is the way I do it, hold down the control key and press F8, the status menu will now have focus with the vo-left and right keys, navigate till you hear "battery" and then arrow down, you'll then hear the battery status, you can choose either remaining time or a percentage of remaining charge. Conversely if your Macbook Pro is connected to AC power, the status indicator displays how much time is remaining until the battery is fully charged or a percentage of charge in the battery, if the battery is fully charged then the status bar will indicate this.
