Hello Dotty,

This isn't Sarah, but you can get the latest iPhone manual in at least
two ways. I posted to the macvisionaries list about 3 weeks ago that
there were versions of some of the O'Reilly manuals being sold as
iPhone apps:
There's a version of Pogue's "iPhone: The Missing Manual, Third
Edition" that cover the iPhone 3GS available as an iPhone app for $4.99:
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=324601015&mt=8
There's a version of "Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual,
Leopard edition" from O'Reilly Media, Inc. that's available as an
iPhone app for $4.99:
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=325837189&mt=8
There are a few other books, but I don't know whether these are
accessible with VO on the iPhone 3GS, since I don't have an iPhone.
However you could try the free version "iPhone: The Missing Manual
Lite" to check whether you can read that:

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=324686471&mt=8

Then you could upgrade to the full paid version of Pogue's book if you
found it worthwhile.

You can also get these books from O'Reilly as DRM-free ePub bundles.
This includes PDF and ePub formats. If you go to http://oreilly.com/ebooks/
(or Google O'Reilly ebook bundles) you can create an
account, and then search for books, like "iPhone missing manual" in
the search field, then find the link for the third edition:

http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596804299/

Under Buying Options, arrow down to the Ebook format (Mobi, PDF,
ePub) and press the Add to Cart button.

On the web page for your shopping cart, enter the coupon code: STANZACAT
O'Reilly ebook purchases through Stanza on the iPhone qualify for a
40% discount (for an unspecified period). Press the button to either
continue shopping or proceed to checkout. On the checkout page you
should see the discount applied to the order summary before you
complete your check out. Under "Order Summary" there will be a note
like "You saved $8.00 on this order" (e.g. in the case of the latest
iPhone Missing Manual Book -- which is $12.00 for the ebook bundle
with the discount).

You access the files by logging into your account on the O'Reilly
pages, and choosing the link for "Electronic Media", then download the
format you want for each purchased book. I've tried PDF, which reads
fine in Preview or Skim on the Mac, and ePub, which also works in the
Stanza desktop reader that you can download from Lexcycle's pages.

I've found that the Stanza desktop reader mostly works. There are some
differences in how well depending on the source of the epub, and I
prefer the PDFs for greater flexibility of navigation.

HTH

Cheers.

Esther
