Yes, there are pauses, but I doubt they'll go away. It would be hard  
to make VoiceOver behave differently in Mail than in other  
applications, and the pauses improve the reading of other documents  
where new line characters are used correctly.

The problem I would like to see improved is the way VO reads messages  
in HTML. It's really irritating having to switch to plain text  
(Command-Option-p) every time it starts separating out capital letters.
