Have you tried opening that directory in finder from terminal, as in: open books Tilde still books really just means it's in your home directory which is what the tilde / stands for.
The other possibility is that it isnT tilde books but tilde / dot books which would make it a directory that finder wouldn't be seeing by default. But you could try opening that from terminal with open .books (note the period in front.)
