Back in the day there was also the 'fortune' command which I noticed is still available from MacPorts as well. Outputs old time sayings like:

A computer without COBOL and Fortran is like a piece of chocolate cake without ketchup and mustard.
There is nothing more exhilarating than to be shot at without result.

I use the commands from the lrzsz sackage from the command line, installed via macports.

As for the cable, as the end that goes into the braillelite is the non-standard part of the serial cable, the last time I checked Freedom Scientific still had them but that was a while ago. For the usb cable, I have used keyspan and prolific but the last time I checked I could install the prolific driver on the Mac but not the keyspan. Of course it attaches to the serial cable and you end up with a /dev/usbserial device name.

I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
And now, every day:
"This I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness."

Hello,

I am about to do the same. In the good old days I used minicom. I see I can still use it. There are a few choices discussed here.

I need a lead. Typical BrailleLite's use non standard cables. Can I still get one? If so, from where?

Thanks.

Hi, all,

I know I'm a dinosaur, but I can't seem to part with my trusty old braille Lite 40. I have an application on the Mac called ZTerm that uses serial communication and allows me to transfer files to and from the Braille Lite with the help of a USB-to-serial adapter. I'm looking for a backup method, just in case this app is discontinued or anything else comes up. Is there a way to do this in Terminal? Are there other apps that are still being updated that would allow me to do this?

just to clarify, I do have a stand-alone Braille display that is compatible with the Mac, but doesn't have a book reader or other notetaker features. i also am looking hard at the Perkins MiniBraille, but can't buy it for the foreseeable future.

Thanks,
Teresa

Slow down; you'll get there faster.
